ABBHP Examination

Options

An examination is required of all applicants for board certification. Applicants are able to select from an online 100 item multiple choice examination or an oral examination. The oral examination is administered by an ABBHP Diplomate or from an examiner selected by the board.

Online Examination

The 100 item multiple choice examination is administered online at a secure website. The questions are representative of knowledge that a specialist in behavioral healthcare practice is required to know. The content areas of the exam will be provided when an applicant is ready for the examination.

The questions derive directly from the study materials that accompany the courses required of all board certificants. The syllibi for the courses are provided in the course materials. The examination can be scheduled at any time after the applicant is notified that he or she has met all the requirements for board certification. Applicants will be sent a password and web address to complete the examination. A score of 75% is required to successfully pass the examination. An applicant can take the examination two additional times should they not pass on the first attempt. Applicants will be required to pay the examination fee for each additional attempt.

Oral Examination

The oral examination consists of a series of questions that are designed to assess the applicant's knowledge and implementation of sound behavioral healthcare practice. The oral examination can be administered either in person or by telephone conference. The oral examination can be scheduled at any time after the applicant is notified that he or she has met all the requirements for board certification. An applicant can take the examination two additional times should they not pass on the first attempt. Applicants will be required to pay the examination fee for each additional attempt.
